I first started
taking photographs in my early teens when as a
cyclist I found it easier to be at the finish first
if I was taking pictures of the race. A bonus was that all other
cyclists bought copies of the pictures from me. I
then studied lighting and studio techniques at night
school before going to University where I became the photographer for
the Student's Union
newspaper. On moving to London in the late sixties I carried on
working as a photographer whilst earning a main
income from other sources. In 1972 I decided to
become a full time professional and opened my first studio
in Fulham where I shot mainly for several fashion
designers and a couple of
Record Companies. So specialising in Fashion and
Music. I had this studio for several
years before moving it to Clapham Common where I
stayed until 1978.
I then moved away
from London back to my birth town of Bristol to follow another career in the casino industry and
photography becoming a hobby again.
In 1993 I left
the UK to work in Moscow as a director for a group
of casino's and it was here that I started to work
in a studio again. In 2003 I started a studio in
Moscow which I had until I returned to UK in 2004.
Moving back to Bristol I was reduced to a smaller
home studio.
In 2008 I decided I wanted to have a larger studio
again with
various set areas and so "David Radford @ The
Studio" was started. The idea was to be able to
hire it out around two days a week and the monies
received would help cover my outgoings for the studio rather than a business bringing in an income for me.
Thus giving me a low cost studio with ever changing
backgrounds and props.
Then in July 2011 I moved to Blaengarw near Bridgend into an old Chapel hall.
These days I would rather be classed as an experienced, advanced hobbyist rather than a professional as I'm not trying to make a living from my photography just produce some great pictures.
You can see some of my work on www.davidradford.co.uk as well as such sites as Net Model, Model Mayhem, Net Portfolio and Pure Storm.
